How can it help my children?
TheMigrant Education Program works to ensure that migrant children fully benefit from the same free public education provided to other children. This program offers services to help reduce the educational disruptions and other problems that result from repeated moves.
Every day you are faced with making decisions, and how well you make them can be affected by whether you are able to read, write, and speak English, and whether you have an understanding of how American culture works. You want to give your children every advantage you can in life. The Migrant Education Program is one of those advantages.
What does the SWPSRC MEP program offer?
A variety of services are available to migrant students in addition to the educational services provided by your school district. All services are provided free of charge. Some of the services that may be available include:
• Parent informational meetings
• Preschool education home-base services
• After-school educational programs
• Tutoring and homework help
• Adult education (ESL, health, nutrition)
• Transportation
• Free and reduced lunches
• Summer programs
• Community networking
• High Education assistance
• Community Resource information
Migrant services vary from each school district depending on student and family needs.
How can it help my family?
The Migrant Education Program offers wonderful tools for your children, but it also gives the entire family the opportunity to learn at home, right along with your children. Migrant specialists will provide educational materials that everyone in the household can utilize and learn from.
How do I qualify?
To be eligible for this opportunity, you must have moved to a new community within the past three years and have worked or are working at an agricultural job. This may include:
• Planting, cultivating, or harvesting seasonal crops
• Packing, processing, or transporting food products
• Livestock or ranching
• Nursery or grain elevator work
Note: Landscaping does not qualify
What is “Migrant Education”?
The Migrant Education Program (MEP) is available to schools and families across the United States. Its focus is on helping families who work in agriculture—families like yours who know the importance of a good education for your children and realize the impact it can have on your entire family.
You may be eligible for a variety of local services to assist you and your children. A migrant recruiter will visit with you to determine if you are eligible for this program and what benefits the program may offer your family.
